Nanjing Library is the Jiangsu provincial public library, as well as one of the national level libraries. Its predecessors can be traced back to the Jiangnan Library established in 1907, and the National Central Library prepared to construct in 1933 during the Republic of China. In 1954, it was officially named Nanjing Library. Nanjing Library is located in the center of Nanjing. There are two existing premises with a floor area of 96.1 thousand square meters. The Daxinggong district was fully opened in 2007 with free wireless coverage throughout the Library. Its reader’s card totaled nearly 1.4 million. It receives more than 6 thousand readers daily.

By the end of October 2020, the total amount of the collected books of Nanjing Library reached more than 12. million copies, after only the National Library and the Shanghai Library, ranking the third in the whole country and enjoying higher reputation. The Library is famous for the historical document collection with its holding of 1 .6 million volumes of ancient books together, 700 thousand volumes of Republic of Chinese literature. As far as the collection of the ancient books, the rare books reaches 140 thousand volumes, and 631 of which have been selected in National Precious Ancient Book Register already, including the originally written books of the Tang and Liao Dynasties, precious block- printed editions, manuscripts, copies and books in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
