Hieronim Łopaciński Provincial Public Library in Lublin has been part of the colorful history of the city and region for over a hundred years. Currently Library performs the functions of the provincial, regional, scientific (from 1965) and public libraries. Library users are mainly students, high school students, academic staff and regionalists. Since 2017 there have been 121 people working in the Library, and its collection numbers 559 378 items, including 48 439 periodicals and 188 341 Special-Collection items (like manuscripts, old prints, maps and atlases, graphic collections, photographs, postcards, documents of social life, microfilms).
The Library has been preparing and publishing a regional bibliography. The bibliography of the Lublin region is a subject bibliography, it registers the entire literature related thematically to the region. Since 2001, the Bibliography of the Lublin region has been published in the electronic form. The library publishes various historical, occasional and regional publications and two magazines: “Bibliotekarz Lubelski” (yearbook, 1956-) and “Dostrzegacz Biblioteczny” (1995-) on the nature of the information bulletin. The Library organizes also scientific conferences and lecture series. The Library runs the Digital Library, where digital publications are published from its collections, and which is now part of the Virtual Library of Lublin.
Provincial Public Library Hieronim Łopaciński in Lublin annually organizes a number of undertakings promoting reading and broadly understood culture, literary, artistic and musical, art and photography exhibitions. The Library organizes also meetings with the authors and book promotions. The Library implements cultural events like: National Library Week, The Night of Libraries, The Lublin Night of Culture, The Lublin Science Festival, The National Readings. The Library events have been regularly included in the annual calendar of the most-important cultural events in Lublin and the Lublin Region. In particular Library assigns all its activities aimed at promoting the culture of the region to everyone. The Library also runs its own bookstore “U Hieronima” (stationary and online sales).
The Library is in charge of content-related supervision over the network of public libraries in the voivodship – 582 libraries and branches and annually organizes a number of workshop and conferences for librarians from lubelskie. Each year the Library has honoured with the Anna Platto Awards the best employee in a Lublin or regional public library for working with children and young people and with the title The Librarian of the Year for the best librarian for the overall activity. The Library coordinates national programs for libraries in the province, like: The Book Clubs - underway since 2007, the Book Clubs program is the most important Book Institute program for promoting readership in Poland. The program is chiefly targeted at readers who use public
libraries, and is based on the premise that we need places to discuss the books we read; The Libraries Activity Analysis Project - the aim of the project is to develop and implement uniform methods and tools for systematic evaluation of the operation of public libraries based on the analysis and comparison of statistical data and functional indicators, including surveys of library recipients satisfaction; About finances ... in the Library – the essence of the project is the financial education of adults (mainly after the age of 50) conducted in libraries in the villages and small towns throughout Poland. During the meetings organized and conducted by properly trained librarians, participants learn how to set up an electronic bank account; The Purchase of new publications - the program concerns co-financing for the purchase of new publications and aims to improve the readership in Poland by strengthening the role of public, school and pedagogical libraries as local centers of social life that constitute a center of access to culture and knowledge.
