Music Dream of Celadon: A Short Film about Chinese Music Culture


      As a part of “Voices of the World” International Art & Culture 2017 Series, Music Dream of Celadon, a short film appreciation event was held in HPL on 18th March. Audience watched the short film and met with the director and the actress of the film. They gave a presentation about some behind-the-scene stories of the short film. Besides, a master musician and a composer of celadon music Ding Zhaonian was invited to give live celadon music performance. Moreover, some history of the music and some related knowledge were introduced to the audience. In the meanwhile, the first celadon themed wechat emoji, Chinese Celadon Baby was released at the day of the event.

About the short film
      This short film is based on a real story. Nancy, an American, who happened to see a celadon music performance and fell in love with this music. This made her decide to go to Cixi as a music and English teacher. After learning how to make the instrument of Ou music and playing this music, she successfully performed in the Chinese Celadon Music Festival and realized her Chinese Music dream.
      The short film won the "Jury's Special Award" in the Chinesisches Filmfestival in Germany in 2017 and the "Public Communication Award" in the 1st Ningbo Microfilm Festival in 2016.

About Celadon Music
      Yue kiln originated from Cixi, Ningbo and it is the most famous celadon kiln in Chinese history. The development of Yue kiln thrived in Tang Dynasty when the celadon music was very popular during the time.  It was widely appreciated in a wide range of occasions include tea houses, theaters, restaurants and royal palaces at the time. However, it almost became extinct, but because of the efforts of some local folk musicians, the precious music form: celadon music is able to revive, uncovering the beauty of this music form to the world with her beautiful and unique charm.
