Hitomi: Comfort Women Stories by Kazuko Yokoi

A Japanese playwright and actress couple presented their play on “comfort women” in Hangzhou Public Library on 8 April.

The monologue show entitled Hitomi was written and directed by Yoshiji Watanabe in 2013, whose wife, Kazuko Yokoi, acted in the play. It was a one woman show detailed the suffering of two Korean comfort women, one Chinese comfort woman, and a child born by a Chinese woman after the mother was raped by Japanese soliders. Yokoi played each of the four characters, and cried all the painful experience of comfort women to the public.

Since 1993, the couple created many plays to disclose the truth of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Reunion, a powerful play wrote in 1991, explored the terrible pain, and complextiy of the war’s aftermath——consequences of the acts of huaman cruelty in war. The Rain on Dec 13 exposed the truth about Nanking Massacre. The couple have given these shows in Japan, and also in America and China.

“The meaning of our life lies in telling the truth of the crimes committed by our parents until we died” said the couple.
