During the eleven-year period, the Bakar City Library (employed: 2 professional and 1 temporary staff) operates in accordance with the legal regulations and the rules of the profession, working closely with the profession with the utmost support and synergy of the city government.
The library's initial fund has quadrupled (fund 23.398) with more than 1.800 users (population of the City of Bakar is 8279) have been added to the Library.
Good co-operation has been achieved with schools and kindergartens in the local community and many associations. Schools have commonly agreed collective visits, user-use education for the Library, and various age-specific programs adapted to their age.
The Public Library of Rijeka, the central public library of the City of Rijeka, performs the activities of the Public and School Libraries of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (22 public and 83 school libraries), including the Bakar Public Library.
The Public Library of Rijeka is in charge of professional supervision, activity monitoring, counseling, education of librarians and building a network of libraries.
Cultural activities
Along with standard library services, in these eleven years of business, the Library has become recognizable by the amazing number and quality of many cultural programs; such as recorded encounters, film projections, professional lectures, art and thematic exhibitions as well as children's workshops and performances and other cultural events which means in total approximately 300 cultural events.
Literary encounters with which we have gained great publicity among public, is professionally led by Nikola Petković with guest writers from home and abroad.
International exhibitions have also been realized(Public Library Miran Jarc, Novo Mesto, Slovenia).
Community support and reputation
Through the public space and gathering place, the Library successfully promotes the positive social experience of its citizens and has become a place for gathering for local and wider communities. This is evidenced by the annual award of the City of Bakar and nomination for Library of the Year Award of the Croatian Library Association (2012).
Donations
The valuable donations by people from Bakar to the library such as the one from Mr. Dragan Vladislović providing a rare collection of books - “Vladislović's collection” with expensive furniture and significant amounts for furnishing, publishing, for restoration of rare materials and for the purchase of works of art. The library was also donated with amounts from two Lifetime Achievement Awards got by two respectable citizens.
Printed materials
On the occasion of the 180th National Readings in Bakar (2013), the book "Bakar, Stone Gulf of Good Hope" by Č. Šimić and M. Reuter as well as, in the co-publishing, the “Playbook from our childhood” by Mr. Josip Luzer, got all the attention of the local and wider community.
All of our editions are exclusively local themes for the preservation of historical and cultural heritage.
In addition to the celebration of the City - Margaret’s Day we participate at the Fair by selling own publications at reasonable prices in order to have access to the general public.
The Library is a multimedia center and a gathering place where citizens meet their cultural, educational, information and creative needs.
