Sichuan Provincial Library was founded in 1912 and is one of the earliest public libraries established in China. With a hundred years of development, it is currently a member library of IFLA, the World Bank's data depository, the general library in Sichuan Province, the Sichuan Branch Center of the National Cultural Information Resources Sharing Project, the Sichuan Ancient Books Protection Center, the Sichuan Provincial Center of Document Reorganization and Library Services, and the Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base in Sichuan Province. It represents leading academic highland, has an important position in China, and has a leading position and demonstration role in west China. The collections in Sichuan Provincial Library are rich and unique, with more than 5 million books and 150 TB of digital resources, including 650,000 ancient books and 220,000 republican documents.

The new library of Sichuan Provincial Library, with a total investment of RMB 490 million and a building area of 52,000 square meters, was opened on December 26, 2015. In 2016, it received nearly 1.9 million readers throughout the year, and borrowed nearly 400,000 paper documents. In 2017, it received 1.97 million readers, and borrowed nearly 370,000 paper documents. It receives about 10,000 readers every day at the weekend, with the highest daily reception of 15,000 readers.

With obedience to the idea of operating a library on the basis of “Humanities, Standards, Technologies, Brands, Innovations, and Talents”, and aimed to developing  into a national reading instruction center, cultural inheritance center, and a cultural exchange and theoretical research center, Sichuan Provincial Library actively performs the national reading promotion activities, creates cultural service brands such as the "Bashu Forum" and "Sichuan Library  Micro Library", promotes the construction of three major public digital cultural projects, establishes “Smart Home Library”, implements the Han-Tibetan Cultural Exchange Project, and  explores a new model for the military-civilian integrated development. It has made positive contributions to promoting the outstanding Chinese culture, satisfying the demand of readers for a better life, and building a Scholarly Sichuan.
