After more than 100 years of development, Changchun Library has now been built into a shared space of culture and knowledge that integrates culture, education, recreation and other functions. By adhering to the concept of public welfare, openness, equality, inclusiveness and the service tenet of people oriented and service uppermost, it spreads knowledge and serves the society, and improves the citizens’ culture and life quality with open, smart, all-weather and accessible service. Changchun Library has been honored with National First-Class Library, National Civilized Unit, Readers’ Favorite Public Library, and the National Reading Demonstration Base, etc.

Changchun Library has now three buildings with a total construction area of approximately 35000 square meters. It is open to the public for free all year round. By the end of 2017, the total amount of library collection is over 3.45 million books, and the local storage of digital resources is about 100.9TB. Changchun Library receives more than 1.3 million readers, lends nearly 1 million books, and holds 400 to 500 activities a year. It has formed a large-bay, diversified, and multifunctional service pattern, which realizes the integration of collecting, consulting, lending and reading. It comprehensively applies radio frequency identification devices (RFID) and self-service equipment, and realize the full coverage of Wi-Fi to provide efficient and convenient service. Changchun Library has set up lending section, culture exhibition hall, self-service E-reading experience area, digital learning center for citizens, study hall and other functional areas. Following the principle of refined service, it has specially established reading rooms for the aged readers, reading rooms for visually impaired people, activity room for children, and so on. In addition, it also put up reader restaurant, coffee house, lounge area, elevator, passage for the disabled, and automatic lockers to create a better environment for readers.

Changchun Library has been actively exploring innovative service mode, expanding inner and outer service space, and has now formed a vertical and horizontal service mode that covers national reading promotion and social education activities. Vertically, in chronological order, a series of reading activities on different topics are held throughout the year in traditional festivals, 4•23 World Book Day, Library Service Publicity Week, Citizens Reading Festival and winter and summer vacations.

Horizontally, by taking public service as the axis, Changchun Library has built a “real plus virtual” city reading network that includes main and branch library, 24-hour self-service library, mobile library, digital library, mobile APP library, WeChat platform and the like. After years of development, Changchun Library has pushed forward nearly 20 regular, diversified and serialized brand reader activity programs that have a certain social influence, such as Public Lecture, Parent-Child Reading Activity, Changchun Library Exhibition, Reading Club, Changchun Library Public Class, and so forth.

Under the vision of cultivating urban culture and guiding reading style, Changchun Library has set a goal of building itself into a knowledge and information center of the city, a learning and exchange center for the public, and a culture and leisure center for the people. It will further advance the nationwide reading, enable more people to enjoy library services universally and equally, and enhance the masses’ sense of gain from public cultural service. Changchun Library will surely play a more prominent role in promoting the cultural development of the whole city.
