Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province  (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Library’) was established in 1912. It is a provincial-level comprehensive public library, a national first-class library, the Guangdong Provincial Branch of the National Cultural Information Resource Sharing Project, the Ancient Book Protection Center of Guangdong Province, and the Guangdong Provincial Branch of the National Library Joint Cataloging Center. The Library Has successively won honors in the service for the Elderly and the Disabled, as well as in the aspect of Reading Promotion, Civilization Dissemination, etc.

The Library continues creating a high-quality environment for citizens. By the end of 2023, the total number of paper collection was about 10.01 million volumes, including over 30000 kinds of ancient books and 300000 volumes. The Library is the largest collection center for Guangdong local literature and Sun Yat-sen literature in China. There are 1.294 million e-books and 53 electronic resource databases, with a total storage capacity of 671TB. In 2023, the total number of people in circulation was about 3.6 million (excluding the mobile libraries), with approximately 4.07 million people receiving services in library and 1.3343 million copies of  books borrowed; holding over 2000 reading promotion activities such as lectures, exhibitions, and training; the total number of visits to the digital library network reached 25.5688 million. The Library makes every effort to create more than 50 reading promotion brands, and improves the service space for  children and the disabled as well as foreign language learning; It has hosted multiple‘Shu Xiang Lingnan’ and ‘World Reading Day’ theme activities in Guangdong Province, and continued to organize the Public Library Service Promotion Week every year.

A provincial general survey of ancient books is launched  by the Library continually. A Talent Training Base for the National Ancient Book Protection Center as well as the Branch in Guangdong of the National-level Ancient Book Restoration Skills Transmission Center has been established in the Library. It also makes efforts to the public awareness of ancient books protection, launching activities called‘Ancient Book Protection Course into Campus’. The Library also strives for the local literature publishing and digital processing of ancient books. By now, varies of large-scale local literature series such as Guangzhou Encyclopedia and Sun Yat-sen Literature have been compiled and published.

With the constant exploration of the smart library, the ‘Guangdong Library Passport’ service system has been built up. And the Library Turing, which is the first intelligent library application scenario of Smart Library in the field of book acquisitions and cataloging in China, has been created by the Library. The achievements of smart library have been selected as excellent cases of Cultural and Tourism Technology Innovation in China multiple times.

The Library plays a leading role in the development of the Public Library Alliance of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as well as the South China Regional Library Alliance. The Library also makes endeavor to improve the  Guangdong Mobile Library,  county-level branch libraries, and the Guangdong Bibliographic Center.  Organizing the National Library Reference and Consultation Alliance, the Library has developed series of standards for reference and consultation services. Last but not least, the Library has developed plenty of specialized information products such as "Decision Reference", and established the Public Library Decision Information Development and Service Alliance of Guangdong Province, helping the members of the alliance to provide decision support for party and local government departments.
