Library strings refer to 1945, but officially it was opened in 1948.
The first director who encouraged the establishment and established the Library was Mrs. Urani Verria. The library started its way through the delivery of the luggage book. The course of time will put the book in a private condominium in the city center, which will turn into years in the temple of knowledge, a temple that will carry and preserve the city’s wealth. The organization of that time numbered 2 employees and provided service only in two sections: the children’s and adult sector.Little by little the library gets its full form. Addition of the staff to another employee, extending service also in the Periodic section. In the 1970s, the foreign language sector was opened, and a bookmaker was appointed, who was involved in linking and repairing the book. The Fier Public Library for nearly 53 years, like any public library in Albania, offered closed-ended funding. The changes that the Albanian society suffered in the last decade, in each area affected the Library. Her staff realized that the reader had, as part of the fierce community, had free access and equal access to the information available to the Library, regardless of race, nationality, age, religion, language, inability, economic status, employment and education.
In all sections the services with card is done manually and the reader have personal access to the fund, reaching 100 readers per day. Readers choose their own preferences. Dominant are the Nobel Prize laureates and contemporary international literature.
Subscribers statistics boost a number of 3000 per year.
- Activities
Within a year in our Library, are held on average 90 literary and artistic meetings with a total number of over 5 thousand participants.
Projects on books have been organized on world-wide book and author's dates, anniversaries of Albanian and foreign authors etc. In the focus of their ideation and selection is a broad specter of participants, including all ages and community levels.
Inseparable part of our work are:
- Meeting the children of the pre-primary and secondary school, to promote the desire for books and reading since an early age.
- Activities with children aged 10-15 years old, both in Library and in schools
- Special attention is given to bringing young people closer to the book and reading and to divert them from the dependence of social networks.
- We encourage young creators to promote their talents, enabling the publication of an anthology with young creators of 9-year schools.
- Assistance and training of school librarians.
- Literary-themed meetings dedicated to important dates of literature.
Our targets for the next five years:
• Digitalization of the Library as a necessity of time
• Linking two-way relationships between other libraries as a form of new experiences
• Recognizing and promoting contemporary Chinese literature in our country
• Ensuring the latest requirements of the readers for the new worldwide titles
• Provide donations – as an important support for the development of the Library
• To include services in a broad spectrum of user needs
• To follow demographic changes in our area
• Financial institution strengthening and maintaining the professional staff.
• Provision of book delivery anywhere in the territory of the Municipality ( a special library fund and transport vehicle – Bibliobus )
• Support new projects with books on focus.
