Since this is a family blog I want to warn readers in advance that this is a delicate subject and they may want to avert their eyes. Before I left Indianapolis there was much talk among my cubicle mates and me about “squat toilets” versus “Western toilets. Most public restrooms in China will have the traditional squat toilet with maybe one Western type thrown in. In addition, it is strictly BYOTP and I’d recommend a hand towel for drying your hands, too.
Below you see a picture of a squat toilet in the Hangzhou Library. I was given a good tip to roll up my pants legs first. You stand with your feet on the ridged area on the sides and then you just…well, you know the drill. There is a foot peddle near the floor to flush it.
