Cinema Therapy——The Joy Luck Club

Have you ever left a movie theater full of emotions, insights and inspiration? Did you want to share your impressions and feelings right away? Did the movie make you reflect on your own life experiences – struggles as well as gifts?

If the answer is “yes”, then you may come to Hangzhou Public Library to join the cinema therapy group hosted by Luo Ruiqi, one of the most eminent psychiatrists in Hangzhou.

On 13 March, Luo Ruiqi selected the movie The Joy Luck Club to the readers. This movie was based on the eponymous novel by Amy Tan. It focused on four Chinese American immigrant families in San Francisco who started a club known as The Joy Luck Club, playing the Chinese game of mahjong for money while feasting on a variety of foods.

The film revealed the hidden pasts of the older women and their daughters and how their lives were shaped by the clash of Chinese and American cultures as they strived to understand their family bonds and one another.

Luo Ruiqi said that altough it was an old movie, the practical implications remained to be seen. Women nowadays are seeking their own value, no longer bounded by age, but tending to be independent by themselves. The relationship between parents and children varies according to the times and children no longer obeys their parents unconditionally in contemporary society. Parents should learn the way to get along with children accordingly.
